It is a past his family does not want to hear of anymore. The scars of history felt by a westerner in the East. Fabien Schneider. When the first European explorers visited Korea, the country already had a flourishing literary repertoire: there were altogether epics, Buddhist philosophical treatise, erotic novels and satirical theatre plays. Yet, a revival of literature took place only when Korean culture got threatened with extinction, during the Japanese occupation.

It is paradoxically through films from abroad that the Korean people discovered modernism in literature. In the twenties and thirties, literary magazines appeared as a form of resistance. Their texts were a rupture with the traditional ones through their depiction of the social reality in the country, while they also avoided an explicit blame of the occupying forces. Many writers took inspiration from foreign literature and this ferment of ideas laid the foundation of modern literature.

When the Korean directors were forced to produce pro-Japanese propaganda films, several of them embraced literature, either out of national resistance, or to preserve their freedom as artists. Almost all these films were lost during the Korea War. Adapted from a theatre play of , this film can be seen as a metaphorical interpretation on the national history, as its title seems to indicate.

At the end of the fifties, Korean film companies rushed to get distribution rights for European or Hollywood films, more popular than ever. The government, however, took action to stop this phenomenon and encourage the national production. Because of this, film companies had to produce three films in order to woo a foreign film.

By adapting famous literary works the directors gained time on scrip writing, and they made sure their films would be appreciated by the authorities. Hence, literary films became the unexpected and happy result of above all economic interests. Though many films were hastily made only to fulfill quotas, some young directors took advantage of it to assert their artistic ambitions. After gaining popular and critical success, the literary films became an unavoidable genre and a real trend.

By adapting contemporary novels, cinema followed the literary trend of the time. Society still bore the deep scars left by the occupation and the Korea War. Writers tried to exorcize them, with great difficulty, by glorifying perseverance despite the suffering, considered in the nature of the Korean people. Widows, orphans, men killed in action and families suffering oppression became their favorite topics. At the same time, a new trend reassessed the issue of a western life style rapidly settling, promoted by the government, and its consequences on society.

One of the major subjects of disagreement was about the feminine ideals, the nostalgia for traditions preferring Confucian precepts such as chastity, self-effacement and total deference to man. The writer explored new trends such as cabarets, exclusive shops or women entering the economy. From the sixties onwards, these realistic trends were more and more criticized for their excessive sentimentalism and their romantic vision of suffering. Massive industrialization and urbanization made many victims who could no more be disregarded, while many authors started writing to denounce the situation.

Realism found a new fertile ground to thrive on. Among others, it found its expression in the alienation, wandering or despair, with recurrent motif such as tramps and prostitutes. In the seventies and eighties, when a revolt was brewing against the authoritarian regime and many illegal writings were illicitly spread, censorship kept control over films. Directors went back to literary films but also to porn films for the sake of their economic survival. After the first free democratic elections took place in , an entire form of alternative literature earlier repressed was suddenly in the spotlight.

It disclosed the tragic events that successive authoritarian regimes had tried to hush up. Even these were however not totally exempt from serious topics developed in the past century. The growth of Internet made the literary production boom, everyone being now able to publish his writings. Korean literature had its fate dictated with the hazards of history, while it kept listening to the people. With their reinterpretation of western literary trends on a Korean context, modern writers established a quite unique literary heritage of its kind.

Your films. My films. To be local and yet universal. To be full of colors, not only black and white. To be a soloist and yet part of the symphony, to go where no one has gone, beyond the headlines, beyond the obvious, beyond the fixed ideas, prejudices, misconceptions, misunderstandings that bring or come from hate, violence, bad blood between people and nations. The films are at once an antidote to all that, sometimes even a tranquilizer, but they are also agents provocateurs, stimulants, even dangerous.

They are loyal to local values and yet they bring them to the world. So is it all about love?
